Creativity and the Human Condition – The Healing Power of Art

By October 15, 2016 Creativity

In this article I am going to share a bloglovin site I found tonight which is inspirational.

“It empowers homeless and disabled people by selling their works online (where 55% of the profits go to the artists themselves).”

Click on the link, I was blown away by the work and the stories behind each artist.

Goes to show how Art can be healing.

Creativity and the Human Condition – Imagination – Secretive, Silent, Hidden Energy

By September 8, 2016 Imagination, Self Awareness

hearing-voicesIn this article I would like to discuss the benefits of creativity for those who are struggling with depression, thoughts of suicide and other issues which are deemed by society as being a little ‘odd’.

First of all, I would like to introduce everyone to a website which brings to the fore an issue which has been held secret by many in our society. That is Hearing Voices QLD

Mr Google says – It is estimated that between 5% and 28% of the general population hears voices that other people do not. Hearing voices is an auditory hallucination that may or may not be associated with a mental health problem. It is the most common type of hallucination in people with psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia.’

In a by gone era those who ‘heard’ voices were subjugated to torture to relieve them of the devil within. Is it any wonder that  those who hear voices are afraid to be open about their special ability?

I believe it is purely and simply imagination gone wild much like a caged untrained dog.  Imagine the anger and frustration, much like a pot boiling over. boiling-pot

Basic physics states that when energy is confined eventually there will be an explosion.

In many cases the medical fraternity intervene putting a band aid on an open wound offering psychological and medical options. Hey, these methods of treatment have their place, in fact in many cases once the lid has blown off the pot this is the only course of treatment.

My question is, if more of us were brave enough to tap into our Creative Imagination  and come to learn about and accept our true being in a healthy positive manner, we could avoid the terrible repercussions of  trapped energy in a place hidden from view.

Creativity and the Human Condition – Freedom

By September 6, 2016 Self Awareness

In this article we want to share a website which talks about the Human Condition as seen from the Creativity Perspective

I was so excited when I read this article, especially the stories of the Eaglet and the Lion Cub. it reminded me of trying desperately to fit in and to be accepted resulting in a deep frustration.

Many of us are like the Eaglet, Eaglet locked into a place of expectations, not allowing ourselves to follow our instincts. Whether it is due to lack of self belief or  a desire to belong to something with which we are familiar, we remain locked in a place where we feel comfortable ignoring that inner voice telling us we are not being true to ourselves.

Lion CubSome of us are fortunate enough to have someone come along to take us by the scruff of the neck forcing us to take a long hard look at ourselves in our reflection and find the soul unencumbered by expectations.  This is what happened to me twelve years ago, beginning a long road of self discovery full of challenges and enlightenment.

There are so many people in this world who are like the Eaglet trapped in a world of expectation and limitation. Is it any wonder there are so many who suffer from mental and emotional trauma? Society dictates there are only so many people in this world who can be labelled creative or artistic which places a limit on expectation of self. Why is this? Who has the right to label anyone?

Eagle in FlightWe are all like the Eagle, we can soar as high as we want, free to follow our intuition, be one with the person we are meant to be.

Creativity and the Human Condition – A Plan to Achieve

By August 8, 2016 Creativity

Been a little busy of late, but, what does it matter as long as we feel as though we are moving forward and have a plan.

The plan is to do a lot of paintings like this one.

White Spectre

White Spectre

In fact, have started a new one,

Winged SPectre

Winged Spectre – Work in Progress

Don’t mind the piece of paper attached to the canvas, that is for my benefit. He is going to be golden like in the painting below.

The wings will be white of course with a soft gold. Just a little excited. Am hoping if I can get my skates on, I should have enough paintings in my arsenal to do an exhibition titled The Elements, – Water, Wind, Fire and Earth 2017.

And just to go off on a tangent, I was talking to one of the ladies in my Art Class who is herself a wonderful painter and her friend who in turn answered that she doesn’t have a creative bone in her body.  My Art Class friend scoffed saying that was how she felt as well until at the age of sixty, she picked up a paint brush.

Her friends reply was, “but you can draw!”

The Wave 2

There was quick rebuttal, “Painting has nothing to do with drawing! Its about shapes and colours and those are learnt.”

“I cant draw for nuts!” I joined in, “it is just hand eye co ordination and practice.”

The lady looked between us as though we were slightly bonkers, (perhaps we could be) looked to the floor for a brief moment before making a decision,

“Well, I could give it a try, I have always wanted to try painting.”

Isn’t it sad how we cheat ourselves from achieving something we would like to do simply because we don’t believe ourselves good enough to try?Heart

Creativity and the Human Condition – Perception and Judgement

Depression 2

This article is about how we perceive and judge others and ourselves.

Its interesting isn’t it? How we are able to jump to conclusions based on the smallest action or spoken word made in jest or error.

I found this interesting post on facebook today and thought ahh ha! How true. We all battle our demons silently, hidden from view, that is until we present with behaviour which can be misconstrued as rudeness, laziness, attention seeking or just downright crazy. The fact of the matter is, many of us react according to historical conditioning born of a lifetime’s experience.

And yet we judge. We cant help it, we as human beings are born with egos, and those egos guide us in our decisions about others. It is a tool of comparison, yet oddly, its those same egos that cause us to make some of the biggest errors of judgement when it comes to interacting with our fellow man. We very rarely make allowances for the inner being hiding behind a wall of learnt social acceptances.

How do we fix the judgment factor? I don’t know, what I do know is, that normally that which annoys us about another is the same thing that annoys us about ourselves.. Odd Really….

Perhaps we need some creative thinking.  What I do know is that through creativity we learn a lot about ourselves, which in turn helps us to respect and understand others.

Dancing through the Blue

Dancing through the Blue Original Oil on Canvas Artist Ellis Burgess

This article is about Dance, and how as an adult you can maintain a passion.

I was reading a blog by Nancy Lorenz called Adult Ballerina Project

It bought about memories of when I went back to dance after being married and having had my son. It was therapeutic, exhilarating a way to express the inner creativity without the pressures of having to achieve a certain level of accomplishment. Muscle memory kicked in, ligaments and tendons stretched quickly and easily and soon with a little effort, I was back on pointe. Having said that, I completely understand what Nancy was saying about how everyday life takes its toll on the body and concentration patterns, working 9 – 5, running a home, husband and kids, is wearing, but endorphins from rigorous exercise seems to act as a counterbalance. Ballet Cartoon

Whether you have a tough day a work, or if you are finding home life a little stressful, creativity in whatever form is the best tonic, it takes you away from the mundane into a transient world of fantasy. This is what its all about, creativity is for both the audience and performer, whether it be theatre, ballet, dance, opera, or art exhibitions.

Creativity and the Human Condition – Depression and Creativity

DepressionIn this article I am going to share a quote by Paul Illidge

Depression believed in me, stuck with me through thick and thin over the years, through all the hard times, the rejections, the frustrations, the disappointments and the failures, when the only thing I wanted to do was leave this vale of tears, the sooner the better.

Depression hasn’t made me a better person (I don’t believe anything can make us that, I believe we’re good enough as we are), but it’s made my life better; helped me to appreciate the value of making friends rather than enemies with those parts of myself that only depression seems to see. I go toward them, rather than run away from them now.

I can’t imagine a life without depression. It’s opened my eyes to myself, let the light shine in where often times there was only pitch darkness. Our friendship endures to this day. We haven’t seen each other lately, but we make a point of keeping in touch.

What is the connection between Depression and Creativity? Good question.

Artist Plus sign Depression 1

Personally speaking, I have found that when in front of a canvas, my head space is calm and focused. The connection between the eye, brush, paint and emotion is very real. For example, early in my painting journey I discovered my mother was merely flesh and blood. I had always considered her be larger than life, bigger than colossus, infallible. The painting was one of my first attempts at portraying the human form and although out of proportion it wasn’t too bad, – that was until in a fit of anger and frustration, I took the palette knife and slashed the figure with red paint. After the tears subsided, I had another look at my handiwork and painted a keyhole with light shining through being new beginnings. It was in that minute that I realised I was no longer part of her world nor hers of mine.surrealism spiritual painting oils canvas ellis_burgess marge_barley Merely flesh

In conclusion:

Depression is about appreciating lifes experiences and the opportunity to learn from them.

Creativity provides a safe environment to explore those places which would otherwise remain hidden strangling our ability to live our lives realising our full potential.

Creativity and the Human Condition – Dance transcends Worldliness.

In the article I am going to share a description of dance which is more profound than the accepted adjectives .

Found this post in bloglovin, and finally, I have found a description of dance which has for me until now been indefinable.

This is what my paintings are about, dance, the human body, chemistry of movement, and that indefinable magic of intense meditative introspection allowing the soul to fly free from the confines of the physical constraint. Dance transcends worldliness, it takes dancer and those who watch to a parallel universe, a higher place to which we all aspire translating to a passive communication in a pure form of creation.

This could not be better described than in this You Tube clip by the American Ballet Theatre.
